Renovation, Part 4, Foyer and Living Room

We fell in love with the space of the house the minute we walked in the door. We also knew that some of the things we didn’t care for, like the chandelier and the handrails, could be replaced.

Before:

Iron chandelier (it weighed a metric ton!), too traditional handrails in a contemporary house.

exposed cedar beam and posts had been painted (WHO does that?!!)

During:

New light, new handrails and posts, refaced the cedar beam.

IMG_1581

removed the two columns in the hallway. Note – the hallway had hardwood flooring so we matched the flooring in the living room and dining room to that. It’s not what we would have chosen, but we didn’t want to rip out hardwood flooring.

Buh-bye carpet!

After:

Hardwoods and furniture. Also, I realized I hung the photos on the far wall too high so they are now 5 inches lower! Looks much better, I promise!

Purple and chartreuse walls, navy cabinet base with brass knobs, spring tension curtain rod, carpet, brass fixtures hung entirely too high (see the two white spots? that’s spackle to fix holes where the towel holder was hanging).

Renovation, Part 2, Basement

June 29, 2013 § 2 Comments

Before:

Bad curtains, wide window and door casings that aren’t appropriate for this house, bad curtains, not my paint colors.

DSC_0161

The hillbilly kitchen. Sink drained into a full size garbage can in the mechanical room (behind the back wall) and was pumped out with a sump pump. Bad light fixture, oddly placed shelving, red walls that assaulted you.

DSC_0160

After:

New paint on the walls and new light fixtures. I still need to touch up some paint. For example, the inside of the window casing is brown. Not sure why but it is and it came that way. Weird, I know.

Removed sink and shelving, new paint and light fixture, though it’s hard to tell in this photo.

Renovation, Part 1, Basement Bathroom

I intended to publish a post about the entire renovation but have come to realize that if I do that it’ll be entirely too long. So, I’ll piece it all together, room by room with before and after photos, starting in the basement.

We gutted the bathroom.

Before:

Popcorn walls painted canary yellow, red cabinet and laminate countertop, linoleum “tile” floor. Not shown : original almond tub.

During:

Walls were sanded down and re-mudded so they’d be flat again.

After:

We extended the Pergo flooring into the bathroom. New toilet, pedestal sink, shower, and accessories.

IMG_0155

Bad photo of the shower. Sorry.

End result:

serene bathroom that doesn’t overwhelm your senses.
